The pawpaw is a small plant family with 4 genera.
It is native to tropical America but is now cultivated in areas toutesles
tropico-equatorial.


It is a plant palm harbor 3 to 10 m high, trunk (it's actually a stem) is marked by the scars of leaf abscission, which are fairly large, long-stalked and lobed.
The fruit is widely consumed in tropical countries (it travel well) but the papaya is also a medicinal plant by its roots, flowers, seed and especially its latex rich in enzymes.
The fruit of varying sizes can reach 5 kg, is generally ovoid Guarani Indian name means "fruit resembling a breast full of milk.
At maturity, papayas are yellowish green to yellow-orange flesh juicy, yellow, orange or red, defines a central cavity filled with small black seeds.

. The latex is collected by incision of the unripe fruit, it coagulates quickly, is recovered by scraping and dried.
It occurs when small fragments white to brown, smell "near-grilled meat" and taste slightly salty and bitter.
There are also latex throughout the plant, particularly in the leaves.
It is a mixture of enzymes which cause degradation of proteins into peptides and amino acids.








The two main components are papain and chymopapain.


Latex is anthelmintic (see glossary), but toxic and effective doses purgative.
The seeds also contain a substance anthelmintic but their pungent actually losing its use.


Found in all organs of a little papaya hydrocyanic acid, a sulfur glycoside (the glycotropoline) in the plant and especially in seeds, and several alkaloids (see glossary) in the leaves.



USES
Consumption of papaya is particularly recommended, is a fruit "wild", generally not treated with pesticides and a tropical fruit that is digested best. Its flavor is somewhat bland relieved by lemon juice. It is perfect fruit salad and sorbet.

The green papaya, peeled, is excellent boiled and accommodated in dish. You can also dry the flesh almost ripe, cut into strips, it will keep for several days.

The fresh latex may be employed to destroy warts and corns.
Some populations of Pacific and Asian sometimes use green papaya and crushed under the face to "clarify" the skin and destroy some melanin spots (a few minutes of application followed by a thorough rinsing, but watch the eyes! ).

The leaves are a little crumpled to tenderize meat, just wrap the meat and leave a few hours and cool.
The decoction (see glossary) leaves helps to remove blood stains on clothing.

The chymopapain is used to relieve or cure sciatic nerve neuralgia resulting from compression by herniated disc. It is injected directly into the nucleus of the disc, the technique is difficult because the enzyme is neurotoxic and can cause significant allergic reactions but this treatment has proven its effectiveness.
The crude or purified papain is used in therapy for gastrointestinal compensate the shortcomings of gastroduodenal and pancreatic secretions.


In external use is an anti-inflammatory and detergent promotes healing of wounds and can combine it with antibiotics. Papain is also included in the composition of dermatological products.
The fresh flowers of the male tree were used in infusion cons bronchitis and tracheitis, but also as a decoction for "liver disease" and "bad digestion" in Brazil.
The roots traditionally among Guyanese Creole and Brazilian caboclos, we used the bark or the inner part of roots as an aphrodisiac or anaphrodisiac but this usage may be related to the sexual symbolism of the fruit.

There are many pharmaceutical preparations containing purified papaïnebrute or, sometimes in combination with other herbal antidyspeptique referred to (see glossary) as a syrup, elixir, capsules or tablets. The general indication of these products is dyspepsia by secretory insufficiency: atrophic gastritis or toxic chronic parasitosis, hépatobiliares and pancreatic disorders, digestive disorders post-surgery.
In homeopathy, carica papaya 5CH is a regulator of the nervous system.
