Breastfeeding for strong bones

Women who breastfeed longer have a reduced risk of being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. This disease where the immune system attacks the joints.
Women who breastfeed for more than a year even reduce this risk to 2 times, for a reduction of 25% for breastfeeding between 1 and 12 months. This observation, made by a Swedish team, has been made in the context of a study conducted on 680 women. She looked at the effect of breastfeeding, oral contraceptives and pregnancy on inflammatory arthritis.

Previous studies seem to establish a link between pregnancy and reduced risk of this disease, but the authors wanted to know the influence of oral contraceptives. According to their results, only breastfeeding seems to have an effect on this pathology. The authors indicate that the number of women breastfeeding for longer durations have increased substantially over the past 30 years and that it is always difficult to establish an absolute link between breastfeeding and the observed reduction in rheumatoid arthritis women, their study provides still more reason to prolong breastfeeding.
