This ornamental shrub native to Southeast Asia is grown in Indonesia, its local name: "koumiss kutching" recalls his European Common names: mustache cat.
It has been introduced throughout the tropics both for its decorative qualities as for its medicinal properties.
It is a perennial flower features white or purple with stamens twice as long as the corolla where the common name.
COMPOSITION AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
Java tea contains a significant amount of potassium salt (up to 3%), diterpenes, flavonoids (see glossary), phenolic compounds, esters of caffeic and some essential oil (see glossary).
The aqueous extract (maceration (see glossary)) is a powerful diuretic that increases urine output but also the aqueous ion elimination.
Flavonoids (see glossary) diuretics are isolated but the aqueous extract total seems to have a stronger effect.
The mother tincture (see glossary) water-alcohol lowers the rate of urea and uric acid blood.
The total extracts of the plant seraientt also antibacterial and choleretic elsewhere (see glossary).
USES
The orthosiphon is used to facilitate the function of elimination and digestive and kidney as adjuvant dieting.
Its use is also advised to remove kidney stones and control the infectious disorders associated with gallstone disease.
It is a plant listed in pharmacopoeias German, Swiss and French. It occurs as steep bag, and single dosage formulations (eg mother tincture, 50 to 100 drops a day), or sometimes in combination with other plants under diuretic.
We can also prepare maceration (but also the infusion) with the leaves and flowering tops fresh.
